UFV women's hoopsters topple Winnipeg in Game 1

The UFV women's basketball team upset the Winnipeg Wesmen 77-63 in Game 1 of a best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series on Friday at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Rookie forward Sarah Wierks led the way for the Cascades, posting a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Aieisha Luyken shared team-high scoring honours with 18 points, and added five assists.
Alyssa Gaukel (13 points) and Tessa Klassen (10) also scored in double figures for the UFV women, who notched the first Canada West playoff win in program history.
Amy Ogidan paced the Wesmen with a game-high 23 points.
The Wesmen, seeded second in Canada West and ranked ninth nationally, came in heavily favoured to beat the seventh-seeded Cascades. But UFV can now finish off Winnipeg on Saturday evening. Game 3, if necessary, would go on Sunday.
