Cascades clawed by Cougars
The University of Regina Cougars defeated the University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team 87-83 in a Saturday night nail-biter at Abbotsford’s Envision Athletic Centre.
The Cascades started well, matching Regina basket for basket to lead by one point after the first quarter. The lead changed hands several times in the second quarter, but Regina outscored UFV by three points to take a 45-43 lead into the intermission.
Coquitlam’s Sam Freeman had 12 first half points for the Cascades, with Zeon Gray (Los Angeles) adding 11.
The teams battled through a tough third quarter, and the Cougars expanded their lead to five heading to the final frame.
The Cascades continued to apply pressure, but the Regina defence held firm to give the Cougars their 12th win of the season.
Gray and Freeman each ended up with 18 points to lead UFV. Abbotsford’s Joel Friesen had 16 points and Josh Kufske (Abbotsford) chipped in with 13.
Friesen pulled down nine total rebounds as UFV recorded 34 boards for the game.
The loss drops the Cascades regular season record to 6-12, leaving them tied with the University of Calgary Dinos for the eighth and final playoff berth.
UFV now travels to Winnipeg and Lethbridge over the next two weekends before closing out the 2010-11 Canada West regular season at home against Brandon University (Feb. 18-19).
