Confidence was not the problem for South Delta Secondary’s cross country team as it headed in the Fraser Valley championships Oct. 21 at the Hope Golf and Country Club.
It was the fear of the unknown when it came to lining up against older athletes.
But Grade 8 student Mackenzie Connors was able to overcome his nerves and pace himself himself well through the first kilometre of the 4.7 km course before moving ahead into the lead followed closely by three other Sun Devils—Josh Adams, Daniel Finkle, and Harrison Wade.
Together the four of them placed first, second, sixth and eighth respectively. With strong runs from Kevin Miller, Brent McNeil and Dawson Church, SDSS claimed the prize as first place team and advances on to B.C. championships Nov. 6 at Crescent Park in Surrey.
On the womens side, with four juniors moving up to run in the senior division, and possibly inspired by the junior boys’ performance, the SDSS girls team placed second overall behind Semiahmoo.
The result also advances the South Delta team to the B.C. championship.
The team was led by Peggy Noel who placed ninth, Gillian Thiel who came in 12th, Laura Patterson (23rd), and Libbie Pritchard (32nd).
The team also received strong performances from Jessi Triano, Ally Patterson, Whitney Stuart, and Kelsey Hindmarch.
