LETTER—Show of respect
On Nov. 11 I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony in Ladner.
It was an inspiring and sobering event. The individuals behind the scene who prepare this ceremony and the many people in our community—from boy scouts to veterans—who actively participate in the proceedings deserve our heartfelt thanks.
This ceremony is a reminder to me that the sacrifice and suffering of individuals in their fight to improve the lives of others deserve our gratitude and respect.
We cannot thank these brave people personally, but we can honor them by recognizing the gravity of this occasion.
It was thus disconcering for me to see people with their dogs on leash and their coffee mugs in hand, slurping away while speakers on stage were eulogizing the dead. Someone next to me twice answered her cell phone and carried out a social conversation during the program.
The Remembrance Day ceremony is a solemn and somber event. It is not a Sunday outing.
Those of you who are tempted, please leave your dog at home, turn off your cell phone and postpone your coffee break.
Think of this as your very own personal sacrifice on this special day. You will feel better for it and so will the people around you.
Frank Buonanno,
