The Delta Chamber of Commerce is recognizing local citizens who have made outstanding contributions to the community at its annual Hats Off Gala Nov. 13. The South Delta Leader is introducing you to the finalists in the weeks leading up to the event. The first of six installments features the Volunteer of the Year nominees.

Cecil Dunn dedicated four years to fighting a BCTC power line upgrade through residential Tsawwassen, in particular as co-chair of the Tsawwassen Residents Against Higher Voltage Overhead Lines Society (TRAVHOL).

Dunn positioned himself as front man in the debate. He prepared presentations to municipal councils, provincial representatives, residents and community groups, and became knowledgeable of proposals by alternate proponents.

Dunn sought to resolve this issue, leaving no stone unturned and exhausting all avenues.

Volunteer extraordinaire describes Linda Frost. All through her children’s school years Frost volunteered with the school library, reading program, Parent Advisory Council, dry grad committee and many other groups. She was a backstage mom and floor manager with the Delta Academy of Dance, and has canvassed for the March of Dimes.

Frost worked for 13 years with the Delta Leadership Prayer Breakfast at her local church. As DLPB Speaker Coordinator, Linda retained great speakers such as Astronaut Colonel James Irwin and BC Lions Head Coach Wally Buono.

As founding member and current head coach of the South Delta Triathlon Club, Neil Corbett has seen more than 60 members compete in races the world over. As technical director and now a 10-year veteran volunteer of the Delta Triathlon, the event grew from 50 participants to more than 500.

Ten years after joining the inaugural Tour de Delta Board as head marshal and volunteer director, Corbett now manages 150 road marshals over the three day weekend, helping to make Tour de Delta a premier North American race.

Corbett has also begun to serve on the Delta, Parks, Culture & Recreation Commission and joined the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. Working for the Delta Hospital Foundation, he proudly gives after hours time to help many hospital fundraisers including his new initiative, Walk for Health.
