Geographically, and especially historically, the Richmond Sockeyes' natural rival is the Delta Ice Hawks.
But one could make quite an argument that it's actually the Grandview Steelers.
The Steelers, who play out of the Burnaby Winter Club, and the Sockeyes, playing out of Minoru Arena, have already had three memorable battles on the ice this season. And every game ended in a 4-3 score.
The Steelers won here Sept. 27 and at Burnaby Oct. 1. The Sockeyes gained some revenge here Thursday with a 4-3 overtime decision and hope to at least match that with another victory when the teams meet again in the second half of a home-and-home Sunday in Burnaby.
Grandview opened the scoring in the most recent game with Joey Pavone, the Steelers' captain, beating Richmond goalie Matt Walker at 6:15 of the first period. But the Sockeyes wasted little time getting back on even terms as Ryan Johnston scored at 6:39.
Coltyn Hansen gave Richmond a brief 2-1 lead with an unassisted goal at 7:26, but Dante Godinho got that back for the Steelers at 9:59 of the first period.
Grandview took a 3-2 lead when Curtis Rocchetti scored at 15:25 of the opening frame, but again it was short-lived as Johnston netted his second of the period for the Sockeyes at 16:22.
Trevor Hamaguchi ultimately decided the affair when he scored in the shootout for the Sockeyes, who have now won 11 games in a row.
