Rapids top field

Richmond Rapids swimmers Jack Hong and Bill Li out-paced the field at the Vanouver Sprint Decathlon last weekend.

Hong, 14, and Li, 13, won top honours in their respective age groups. Hong won four events and Li won three. Hong also set a meet record in the 100-metre freestyle and established six Rapids records, including in the 100 fly previously held by world championship team member Jordan Hartney.

Brandon de Costa also set a meet record in the 50 backstroke.

Overall, 13 Rapids finished in the top 10 in their age groups.

Head coach Robert Pettifer was also pleased with the progress of Kyle Chan, 9, who placed third and Kevin Ye, 10, who was second overall. Aleckxies Afciado and Brandon Crawford, both 11, and Jeanelle Aldaba, Celine Hong and Paula Gosse, all 13, also impressed.

Nicolaas Dekker, 13, was poised to place in the top two but was disqualified on a turn infraction. He won the 50 and 100 fly and was third in the 100 and 200 freestyle.

Patrick Yeh, Keegan Smith, Kyle Bower and Tiffany Orr, 14, all earned top-10 placings, while Serina Xue earned her qualifying time for the provincial championships.

•The Rapids will be hosting their annual FastSwim Invitational Dec. 4 to 6 at Watermania.
