Drew Spencer clearly has a knack for good timing.
A prolific goal scorer with the Richmond Sockeyes last season, when he netted 36 in 48 games as a rookie, Spencer scored twice in his 2009-10 debut Sunday as the Sockeyes (14-4-2) blanked the Mission Icebreakers 4-0 for their sixth straight Pacific International Junior Hockey League win.
Spencer, who had one assist in nine games for the B.C. Hockey League Langley Chiefs this season, was selected the game's third star. But it was teammate Matt Walker who stole the show. Walker, the team's starting goaltender, made 28 saves to post his second shutout in as many games. He blanked the Squamish Wolf Pack 7-0 last Thursday. Walker has a league-leading four shutouts and a 1.91 goals against average in 15 games.
Second star Ryan Johnston had a goal (the winning tally 5:39 into the first period) and two helpers in a strong overall game for the Sockeyes, who host the Delta Ice Hawks (9-8-1) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Minoru Arenas. Captain Alex Koch added two assists. All four Sockeye goals were on the powerplay.
Ironically, none of the Sockeyes' big three picked up any points as PIJHL scoring leader Jeremy Hamaguchi (28 points), Trevor Hamaguchi (27 points) and Sean Thorsteinson (26 points) were kept off the scoresheet.
