New West will test Hugh Boyd’s mettle today

The Hugh Boyd Trojans junior varsity football team will learn a lot about itself today.

After an embarrassing 35-0 exhibition loss to the Mission Roadrunners last week, the Trojans face another top team in the New Westminster Hyacks at 3:45 p.m. at Hugh Boyd Park. But win, lose or draw their league opener, the Trojans’ biggest measuring stick will be effort.

“No matter what your skill set is, any time you lose like that you’re challenged mentally,” Hugh Boyd coach Peter Adams says. “The question now is how we deal with it. It can be a turning point of the season and help or hinder us. I hope it brings us together more.”

Adams has been on both sides of the equation many times—as a player and a coach. He says winning or losing by a wide margin doesn’t clearly reflect a team’s ability or inability.

“Momentum is a funny thing, just as confidence is,” he says. “But blocking and tackling still wins football games and we have to try and do a better job against a good New Westminster team. If we can get off to a quick start and maintain focus the whole game and cut down on self-imposed mistakes I’ll be happy.”
