In winning three events, Al Brown of Richmond set a new World Police and Fire Games’ record at the competition held in Vancouver last month.

The retired Vancouver police officer shaved three seconds off the old mark for competitors 70 years and over in the 800 metres, placing first in 3:25.84. He also won the 1500 metres (7:12) and the 10k cross-country race in one hour.

A longtime Richmond Kajak, Brown gave up contact sports when he was in his 50s, but to keep active took up running.

Brown has won the masters team award each of the last two years at the Royal Victoria Marathon. He is currently training for the 2009 Victoria half marathon and has his sights set on competing in the 2011 World Police and Fire Games in New York.
