The provincial Bantam lacrosse championships are underway in a city known for its love of the sport.
Richmond has changed a lot since the early days when the Farmers and Milkmaids out-drew hockey. But this weekend, the fastest game on two feet is centre-stage again as Richmond’s Bantam A and B Roadrunners get set to play games that matter for the first in over three weeks Friday at the provincials.
Richmond’s Bantam A team, the defending B.C. titleists, will play Kamloops, a growing hotbed for lacrosse, at 11 a.m. at Minoru Arenas. The B’s begin their title hopes at 12:30 p.m. against Peninsula (Saanich) at the Ice Centre. Another of the B team’s three pool-round games is at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Minoru Arenas versus Coquitlam, which handed the locals one of their only two losses in May.
The tournament continues through Sunday, with the finals beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Minoru Arenas.
Admission is free.
There is also an individual skills competition, Tricks With Stix, Friday at 2:30 p.m.
•Richmond’s A team plays round-robin games Friday at 11 a.m. versus Kamloops and 7 p.m. versus Victoria-Esquimalt at Minoru Arenas and 11 a.m. Saturday versus Delta at the Ice Centre.
•Richmond B’s play Friday at 12:30 p.m. versus Peninsula at the Ice Centre, at 8:30 p.m. versus Coquitlam at Minoru Arenas, and 9:30 a.m. Saturday versus West Kootenay at Minoru Arenas.
