Andrea Krause has been proud to coach the Richmond Panthers for the last four seasons.
But she’s never been prouder of the girls than last weekend when their efforts earned the local girls’ fastpitch team fifth place in the Squirt C provincial championships at Steveston-London Park.
“They played as a team and most of all sported a fantastic attitude and showed excellent sportsmanship,” said Krause.
Undefeated in league play and first in the Richmond Squirt C Division playoffs, the Panthers (Olivia Krause, Abby Weismann, Rachel Nishi, Caitlin Hanley, Claire Norton, Priya Narsaiya, Paige Buhr, Naomi Kaminski, Emily Galloway, Katherine Doyle, Kaylen Gordon and Mackenna Shaw) were third among the 16 teams after round-robin play after victories over Nanaimo Cedar 16-11, New Westminster Royals 11-10, Merritt Turtle Track Diggers 16-5 and a 9-8 loss to the Gibsons Crusherz. They lost both their double knockout playoffs games 11-10 to Gibsons and 15-6 to Abbotsford.
Tsawwassen, also undefeated going into the provincials, wound up winning the tournament—largely on the strength of Hannah Callow’s arm.
The talented young pitcher not only threw back-to-back in a 3-2 semifinal win over Chilliwack and a 20-8 final-game win over Victoria’s View Royal, but displayed a remarkable calmness and poise in both, particularly the semifinal nailbiter.
•Richmond is hosting the provincial senior women’s fastball championships July 24 to 26 at London-Steveston Park. Richmond will have two entries, the A and B Islanders.
