The Richmond Red Sox recently finished the B.C. Minor Baseball Bantam AAA regular season as the top team in the province.
They won the league pennant with a 32-4 league record. Victoria and Vancouver also finished with identical 32-4 league records, but the Red Sox took the tie break by virtue of fewer runs against. Richmond allowed only 89 runs in 36 league games, while scoring 317 times.
“It’s nice to get first overall,” said head coach Alex Klenman. It’s a real accomplishment and an advantage as the No.-1 seed. But at the end of the day the provincial championship is the prize we’re after. We have to stay focused and bring our A game to that tournament.
“Anything can happen, and on any given day anybody can beat anybody and baseball is particularly that way. We’re right where we want to be, the finish line is within sight, but those last few steps are the most difficult.”
The provincial tournament is July 31 to Aug. 3 in Port Coquitlam.
