Why do Brighouse Park users have to pay to park

Editor:

I am writing this letter to express my concern over pay parking at Brighouse Park. Pay parking is enforced seven days a week, holidays included, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. This will affect all the people who come in the evenings and on the weekends to jog or walk the dogs, as well as the parents who bring their children for baseball and soccer games.

To my knowledge, there is free parking for all other parks in Richmond. I wonder why Brighouse Park does not enjoy the same privilege.

The city is spending a lot of money to keep this park well maintained by cutting the grass, pruning the trees and shrubs, planting seasonal flowers and generally keeping it clean. Unfortunately because of pay parking, this park is not well used.

About 30 to 40 people go to Brighouse Park every morning to do tai chi. The two elevated terraces are ideal as there are trees on both sides providing shade from the hot sun in the summer. We cannot park our cars there as 50¢ for 15 minutes is very expensive for us retirees. Instead we park on the side streets nearby. This is most inconvenient but we have no choice.

The vision statement of Richmond is for the city to become the most appealing, livable and well managed community in Canada.

My husband and I have lived in Richmond for more than 30 years and have enjoyed everything Richmond has to offer. We have witnessed the growth and changes over the years and we applaud our elected officials for doing a wonderful job. We hope that the mayor and the councilors will look into this matter and consider providing free parking for Brighouse Park, just like other parks in Richmond.

I am sure this will attract many more people and families to come and enjoy this beautiful little park.
