Former Richmond resident and Hugh Boyd student John William Hanna was the victim of a murder in Burnaby on July 16.

The charred remains of the 25-year-old, whose family owns Richmond-based Hanna Collision Repair, were discovered inside the burned-out shell of a car about 4 a.m. July 16 in the 5600-block of Clinton Street, at Plum Avenue, alongside Clinton elementary school in South Burnaby.

Hanna, who is known to police and has a 2008 conviction for possession for the purposes of trafficking, was remembered fondly by family and friends on a Facebook posting in his honour.

"John, you were an amazing friend, loved by all who you touched and words cannot describe how much you will be missed," wrote someone named Huyen. "We're all still in shock over the loss of an incredibly kind, generous and loving person....Here's to you my friend."

According to the posting, a funeral/memorial has been organized for 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 at Valley View Funeral Home, 14660 72nd Ave. in Surrey.

Hanna, who had been living in Surrey for some time, was identified with the help of the public and using dental records.

The homicide investigation is now being led by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Police believe the case is a targeted homicide.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the IHIT Tip Line at 1-800-551-IHIT (4448).
