Summer is almost here and whether you are going away or not, there’s plenty of action to keep you a tourist in your own town for the next few months.

Pool party

Daily public swimming opens at all of Richmond’s pools. For the rainy days, there’s Watermania, 14300 Entertainment Blvd., and Minoru Aquatic Centre, 7560 Minoru Gate. For those hot and sunny days, there’s the Steveston Outdoor Pool, 4151 Moncton St. and South Arm Outdoor Pool, 10100 South Arm Place. Outdoor pools are open daily from June 29 to Sept. 7. Speed Skating Canada Community Tour

Learn all about long and short track speed skating by visiting Aberdeen Centre from June 22 to 28. Want to check out the gear, touch and feel some Olympic medals, meet athletes such as Jeremy Wotherspoon and Jeff Kitura on the weekend, get their autographs or have a special photo taken with them?

Fraser River Art Festival - July 12

Artists and their original work will be on display at London Heritage Farm in July for the sixth annual Fraser River Art Festival. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit the heritage site to see works from painters, printmakers and sculptors who are members of the Richmond Artists Guild and Riverside Art Circle. Summer at the farm

Visit London Heritage Farm for teas and tours for a nominal fee throughout July and August. The farmhouse is open Wednesdays through Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Contact 604-271-5220.

Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market - Until Oct. 11

Plants, paintings, produce and popcorn—you’ll find it all at the growing Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market.

Back for another year, the bi-weekly market is continuing to grow in popularity. It runs every second Sunday throughout the summer (next market is June 21) at Fisherman’s Park in the heart of Steveston Village. For more information call 604-729-7326.

Strolling Through Steveston

Dive into Steveston’s colourful history with a historic walking tour along the Steveston waterfront. Presented by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and Steveston Historical Society “Strolling Through Steveston” is a guided walk through a century of laughter and hardship in Steveston. Return to the raucous heyday of the fishing village, meet shady characters, and uncover the hidden lives of cannery workers and fishermen. Tours are held each Wednesday and Saturday throughout July and August, from 1 to 2 p.m. Cost is $15, including entry to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, or $10 for walk only.

Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - June 20-21

Students at the Steveston Arts Connection will stage a year-end gala concert at Gateway Theatre this weekend. Shows are Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. For more information, call 604-241-0141 or visit www.theartsconnection.org.

Oval art celebration - June 21

All are invited to meet the artists behind the public art installations around the Richmond Olympic Oval at a special celebration in the oval’s legacy plaza on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. The free event will feature live jazz music by the trio The Grand Trine, tours of the installations and refreshments. Susan Point, who designed the concrete buttress runnels on the north exterior, Janet Echelman, who created Water Sky Garden on the east exterior, and Buster Simpson, who designed Ice Blade at the Hollybridge Canal Bridge, will be feted at the event.
