For her first concert of her tour, Chantal Kreviazuk gave a Richmond audience something new. She brought new songs, new arrangements, a new attitude and new shoes.

New songs came from her new album, Plain Jane, which is more than a statement of her current life as an anonymous mom in Los Angeles. The album is the first non-major label release of her career, indicative of the popular music climate of younger, tabloid-topping performers.

New arrangements came in the form of delicate reworks of some of her hits that span a decade. New attitude came from a now 35-year-old mom who resisted using her "potty mouth" on advice from her own mother. New shoes because, well, it's not everyday she dresses up, she told a smitten River Rock Show Theatre crowd Friday.

Sitting where she's the most comfortable—behind the grand piano—Kreviazuk began the show with a powerhouse performance of her new song "Today." She filled her set with new music, from the radio-played title tracks "Plain Jane" and "Invincible," to self-reflecting songs of "5000 Days" and "Ordinary People."

The classically trained pianist from Winnipeg also sang the hits everyone wanted to hear: "In This Life," "Feels Like Home," "Before You" and "Surrounded"—letting the audience briefly sing the chorus. She also delivered her who-can-forget version of "Leaving On A Jet Plane."

Kreviazuk was dynamic and elegant—even gracious to a couple rowdy Manitobans in the crowd—making the 1,000-seat theatre feel like a living room.

She pulled the stage wall down further by opening up her show to cameras after security spent the first half handing reprimands to picture-taking fans. After singing "Far Away" to a blinding barrage of flashes, Kreviazuk poked a little fun at the would-be photographers to settle her camera-crazed fans.

Clearly this is a new Kreviazuk, but with the same songwriting skills, powerful pipes and incredible instrumentation that landed her on the same marquee as Bill Cosby (who appears at River Rock Nov. 13).
