City council has frozen licence fees for local businesses.

On Monday, councillors Derek Dang, Evelina Halsey-Brandt, Greg Halsey-Brandt, Ken Johnston and Bill McNulty voted against a plan to hike business licence fees this year.

City staff had proposed a two per cent increase to keep up with inflation, but opponents suggested businesses get a break in light of the flagging economy.

Couns. Linda Barnes, Sue Halsey-Brandt and Harold Steves, along with Mayor Malcolm Brodie, voted in favour of the increases.
