A local firm was sentenced Wednesday morning for its role in shipping hundreds of used vehicle batteries overseas without slapping a hazardous content label on the shipping container.

Crown counsel Jane Luke said Allied Salvage & Metals, at 11651 Twigg Pl. on Mitchell Island, pled guilty to unlawfully offering for transport dangerous goods under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act.

Allied was fined $18,000, of which $9,000 will go toward a safety research fund, Luke said.

She said Allied loaded a 40-foot shipping container with the batteries and oversaw it leaving the premises, and should have labelled it.

Transport Canada conducted a two-year investigation after being alerted to the shipment by Hong Kong port authorities in 2007.

Hong Kong authorities were furious because the used batteries could have caused an explosion aboard a ship had the batteries leaked any acid. Each battery contained between one a two litres of acid.
