Residents object to powerline proposal

We are writing as two mothers, along with a group of very concerned residence living on 14th Street South, who strongly oppose the proposal by BCTC to increase the amount of voltage and power lines to dangerously high EMF emission levels along our residential street. After experiencing an increase in uncertainty/anxiety for our well being after attending the recent open house, we felt driven to research the subject of health risks associated with living near high voltage power lines and discovered mounting, continuous, conclusive evidence linking exposure to Electromagnetic Forces (EMFs) with such health risks including; increased risk of childhood leukemia, adult brain cancer, Lou Gehrigs disease and miscarriages.  There is also mounting research regarding how EMFs will disrupt proper functioning of pacemakers and defibrillators. And another important consideration we have, if this project goes ahead as planned, was the concern of the probable decrease in our property values once these bigger, uglier, more dangerous lines and the proposed double sized substation are put in place on our street.

Simply put. We don’t want these lines on our residential streets and hope to work toward finding a much more positive and healthier alternative. We feel it is dangerous, irresponsible, and inconsiderate to the families and citizens whom will be directly, negatively impacted by this proposal.  We intend to petition against this proposed move, as well as petition against the plan to double the size of our existing substation in town near the alternate school.  We encourage anyone who has similar concerns, to question the sanity of this proposal.  We suggest you check out the recent Tsawwassen power line project buy out articles in the Vancouver Sun newspaper online as well as the powerlinehealthfacts.com website.

Sincerely,

Amie McKale
