Four-legged residents deserve better
Bravo to T. Wilson for their letter to the editor. So many of the regular dog walkers at Marshall Field are very upset about the changes in the rules and regulations for walking dogs and would like to see the decision to make it leash-only revoked.
To relegate the dogs to a leash-only policy in the rough cut area along the creek is absurd to say the least.
The area is not well maintained and small dogs in particular find it extremely unpleasant to walk there.
If it is indeed a dog walking park, could we at least assume that the weeds, not grass, will be cut on a regular basis and the path widened so two people can walk beside each other instead of in tandem?
The way it is now, there is no way that you can throw a ball or a Frisbee, particularly because of the condition of the area and more importantly, because the dogs are supposed to be on-leash.
I understand that there are some irresponsible dog owners but there are far more who not only exercise their dogs, but themselves by taking these canine friends for their daily constitutional.
It seems totally unfair to penalize responsible dog owners for the misbehaviour of one dog.
We have been walking dogs in this park for years and I have never had a problem or seen one with dogs fighting or dogs being aggressive towards humans.
Dogs tend to be more aggressive when on a leash.
The ones who are well socialized through their walks in the park are not usually of that ilk.
Dog owners have chosen to have them as pets and they become a very integral part of the family unit.
They deserve to be treated kindly and provided with a good quality of life as are other family members.
Exercise and socialization are important facets of promoting good behaviour for all.
The ball diamonds and tennis courts are fenced so the dogs can't get into these areas anyway and most of the dog owners are aware that the dogs are not supposed to be on the soccer fields and respect that aspect of the rules.
If there is any doubt that dog owners are picking up the dog droppings, take a look in the garbage cans. it is a wonderful service to have bags available but if indeed we are to be only in the rough cut area, it would be handy to have some receptacles along those pathways.
I think it is time for a public forum on this situation. There are always two sides to every problem but input from both sides is essential.
