Letter: Only blustering from our federal gov’t

To the editor:

I’m thankful to Peter Bihun (July 29, Capital News letter to the editor) for his insight into recent events in Ukraine.

As he says in his letter, Russia, the USA and Great Britain all promised to protect the sovereignty of Ukraine. Russia trampled over the promise, while Britain and the USA don’t have the stomach to do much more than bluster and threaten escalating economic sanctions.

We have seen similar blustering from our own government: Unless something has happened in the past week, the non-military aid and loans promised by our prime minister last March have yet to materialize in the Ukraine.

Mr. Putin has betrayed Ukraine, and even Russia where, thanks to him, democracy is now dead.

Curiously, instead of mourning the death the Russian public is reported to be happy with their leader for demonstrating he could engineer the annexation of Ukraine’s eastern provinces.

The editor’s note, beside Wence Horak’s letter (News Coverage By Local Media Criticized, July 29 Capital News), reminding readers that Capital News is a community paper which focuses on local news, means that I will once again renew my subscription to The Globe and Mail for Canadian and international news stories.

Helen Schiele,

Kelowna
