WEST SHORE LETTERS: Sewage, solar plans befuddle resident

The ongoing sewage debate has Colwood wanting to go on its own and build a sewage treatment plant near the Juan de Fuca recreation centre by excavating under the park ’n’ ride.

Why on earth would the municipality consider excavating under the B.C. Transit Park and Ride when there are two perfectly good “holes” already in place? There is one on Wale Road where  a highly touted condo development never materialized, and an even bigger hole at Goldstream and Island Highway where the contentious Capital City Centre development barely got up to street level.

All the digging has been completed and both could accommodate the proposed six-storey commercial-residential building on top. We are assured there would be no noticeable odours from the new facility and that clever planning would ensure reclaiming and reusing water, adhering to Colwood’s ‘motto’ of We’re Cleaner and Greener (but not necessarily smarter). This would be a win-win situation for us beleaguered and bewildered taxpayers.

Also, your article (People of the Sun United, Gazette July 11) with an update on Solar Colwood’s progress to date was certainly not one to convince us that this is a viable program. The numbers don’t add up and apart from winning awards, the number of homeowners who have signed on is not impressive.

If Colwood is that committed to greener and cleaner, let’s start by making sure every new building project, commercial or residential, will be built with solar panels on the roof before a building permit is issued.

Speaking of building, is the new Royal Bay secondary to be fitted with a full solar panel roof? Just wondering.
