Hospital parking fees unite

Surrey’s new Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre separates doctor and patient on every floor. The patients sit at one end of the building, separated from their doctors by a wall, locked doors and a staff of medical secretaries who tell you to take a number and have a seat.

Unlike VGH and other medical facilities, there’s no water in the patient waiting area. You can get a bottle of water if you ask the secretary, and if you look very sick.

If this is your first visit to the Outpatient Department, you figure one hour parking should cover it. If this is your second visit or after that, you know better. The doctor or clinic staff may have had an extra-long coffee break or a late lunch. You sign up for two hours and hope the happy folks at Impark appreciate your $7.75.

Staff have to pay too, but not as much as patients. Maybe that separation between staff and patients is not so big after all. We are all slaves to Impark.
