Letter: Fair Elections Act favours the incumbent
Open letter to Ron Cannan, MP Kelowna–Lake Country:
The content of your party’s [Progressive Conservative] recently introduced Fair Elections Act raises a number of concerns for the future of our nation’s democracy, and I am adding my voice to the growing number who feel it is nothing short of an attack on the very institutions it proclaims to uphold. For the sake of your constituents’ peace of mind, can you explain how you will support a bill which will:
• Disenfranchise thousands of legitimate voters, primarily the poor and elderly, through elimination of Voter Information Cards and the vouching process
• Limit the independence and investigative powers of Elections Canada, in the midst the Conservative Party’s robocall and ‘in and out’ fiascoes
• Allow incumbent parties the power to appoint polling supervisors
• Eliminate spending caps on fundraising efforts focused on long-term party donors.
These changes and others seem to have the coincidental effect of benefiting incumbent parties, which would be anything but fair.
Please heed the call of the numerous experts, and senators from within your own party, who have called for major overhaul or a scrapping of the bill in its entirety.
Anything less would be an affront to the values which I hold to be at the core of our nation, and innocently hope will cut across party lines and political ambition.
Dylan Fraser, Kelowna
