Tarsands can afford to wait
To the Editor,
Re: Take a chance, take it with a pipeline and Pipeline sheeple a baaaad thing, Letters, Jan. 16.
Your Jan. 16, 2014 edition presented two letters from individuals that believe the world is the same as when they were young. Regrettably it is not.
The oil industry seems bent on destroying the landscape and polluting rivers and oceans with poisoned waste water.
They lay pipelines across our country and have us believe they will never leak. Then they wish to load the oil onto tankers and cruise our coastline.
Did I mention Alberta supplies them with free fresh water to aid them in their oil extraction?
In exchange our two individuals believe a few dollars in their pockets, or that of our provincial treasury, is a great deal.
I am not an expert in many of these fields so I simply ask myself, “Is this going to be good for my children, grandchildren, great grandchildren? “.
My conclusion is simple. No.
The tarsands have been there for multiple centuries. They won’t disappear as we await a more foolproof, pollution-free technology for extracting and transporting the oil. A system that is beneficial to our grandchildren.
