Vote, and help New Westminster school get a playground
Let’s show some New West spirit
Qayqayt Elementary school is finally being built, but due to unfortunate circumstances the school will not have a playground.
Imagine: an elementary school without a playground. A motivated group has taken the initiative to apply to the Aviva fund. This fund is a cross-Canada competition—and as of this week, Qayqayt was in ninth place in its category. In other words, they actually have a chance to win. To get to the final round they need votes.
Every year, around this time, I get sent requests to “please vote for us” from many different groups who have applied. All are worthy causes but the one thing I have noticed is that the applications that win are the ones where the community rallies around and supports it.
After our devastating fire on Columbia Street, I have watched in amazement as our community immediately stepped up with its show of support.
And after years of hearing only negative things about the building of the new schools, here is an opportunity to direct all that energy towards something positive. If the community can rally around Qayqayt and vote daily, there’s a really good chance they will get their playground.
Because New Westminster is a community that cares.

Let’s build those kids a playground!
