No ‘god’ needed in anthem
Re. “Should the lyrics of ‘O Canada’ be changed?” (Face to Face, The Tri-City News, Oct. 11).
I read with interest Andy Radia’s and Jim Nelson’s Face to Face columns in the Friday edition. Mr. Radia asks, “Do we take out ‘God’ for atheists?” while Mr. Nelson proposes, “just change... ‘God keep our land, glorious and free.’”
Well. I have news for both of them. When I became a Canadian citizen in 1975, there was no mention of a deity in our national anthem. The words were “O Canada, glorious and free.” This was changed in the early 1980s, which both contributors are probably too young to remember.
I wish we would return to the original text because if we, as Canadians, do not keep our land glorious and free, no fictive entity will do it for us.
