'Canal' Beach a misnomer
To the Editor,
Thanks to our city council for their latest approval to clean up the beach property abandoned by closure of the old plywood mill. The site, already the recipient of extensive cleanup, is lot C of the old mill location at the south end of Third Avenue.
The call for a recreational beach here began years ago, and when the site is finally cleared of logs and other debris it will be a great gathering spot for beachgoers.
So far, the only error made in the plans for creating an excellent venue for watersports is the proposed name of the facility. “Canal Beach” is a misnomer. The Alberni Inlet is not a “canal”.
It is simply an ocean inlet.
A “canal” is a man made excavation through land which, when flooded, is used by ships for passage from one ocean to another. Such as the Panama Canal and Suez Canal.
Our newly developed project in this city should be named “Alberni Beach”: a designation which would better identify the place as being located in Port Alberni.
