Gluten free section helpful
Thank you for publishing the section on gluten free eating in the Kootenays in last Friday’s Nelson Star.
I am continually amazed at the many options available so close to home. When I was diagnosed with celiac decease a few years ago, most restaurants were totally unaware of the problems I faced when eating out.
Things have changed!
It should be noted though, that people with celiac should always tell their server that they are celiac and not just choosing to eat gluten free. Cross-contamination in the kitchen is still a real problem regardless of whether or not the menu states the food is gluten free.
Your article mentioned just a few of the restaurants in Nelson that serve gluten free food, others such as Busaba Thai Cafe, Jagannatha, Kurama Sushi, the Bite Truck and Itza Ristorante have always been good choices too. There are a number of websites that list the local restaurants and shops that cater to GF foods according to the city or town (theceliacscene.com is a BC run site). I would encourage all our businesses to register with them, it is free.
I may not have a choice about what I can eat but I can choose where I eat, and when I travel, I choose the place based on a website. Tourists coming to the Kootenays will do the same.
