Safety a matter of common sense
Re: No train-safety review needed, Aug. 15 letters.
We do not need a review or a gate or anything else to cross the tracks of any railway. Nor to cross a road.
What we need is the common sense we were born with.
A week ago, we watched as three 20- to 30-year-olds crossed the tracks in White Rock without looking at all.
Someone called out to them to “watch out,” whereupon they looked up to see the train no more than a couple of motorcar lengths away.
If you are crossing road or rail, look, listen and – regardless of your pedestrians’ ‘rights’ – give motorists time to stop and give rail right-of-way.
You may be within your ‘rights’ when you cross, but you could also be ‘dead right.’
