Sweetheart deals

Come on down, let’s make a deal.

Behind door Number One is the free ride for the last six years that a Bert Nowak has had, living for nothing on the Brown property. He should be charged for six years of back rent.

Behind door Number Two we have the Beach Hut debacle. Talk about cronyism. Here we have a fast-food concession on town-owned land which has been leased to the same people for 15 years at $1 a year and no taxes and without a public bid process. What’s that all about? This is a monopoly on the entire beachfront with washroom facilities provided.

Now faced with one catering truck, they cry foul as they don’t feel it is fair to have any competition. In fact, we need more food trucks on the beach offering a variety of choices at competitive prices. We could also use a couple in town, say on the bus parking lot. If this logic were to prevail we would have only one gift shop, restaurant, clothing store, art gallery, etc. in town. You get the picture.

Now council in their wisdom has taken a step backwards by not allowing any further licenses and have altered Texas BBQ’s permit of what is allowable for them to do to continue operating on our beach.

Texas BBQ has a petition signed by hundreds wanting them there, obviously a sign that more food trucks would be welcomed. What happened to democracy and the will of the people?

Behind door Number Three — only the shadow knows, but rest assured where there is smoke there is fire.

And for you voters who are keeping score, these sweetheart deals were approved by our current bureaucrats  and previous councils and the original Gang of Three: Teunis Westbroek, Scott Tanner and Barry Avis. I guess it’s not what you know but who you know.
