Chief Skugaid a gem worth keeping in New Westminster
We’re regular vistors to New Westminster and come from Hawaii every year to enjoy the scenery and history. One thing we enjoyed was prowling the waterfront and checking out the all the history that has been preserved, including the paddlewheelers and old fishing vessel, Chief Skugaid. We thought the whole theme really showed what the waterfront might have been like as much as a hundred years ago. Here in Hawaii, all the maritime history has disappeared, old 100-foot fishing vessels unique to Hawaii and even a square-rigged ship from the 1800s, the Falls of Clyde were destined to be sunk until they were rescued by a non profit group of private citizens.
We were therefore upset to hear that Chief Skugaid was being evicted from the dock, which to us seemed to be the center of the historical display. These vessels can never be replaced—surely it’s not asking much just to give her a little break in her old age and grant her grandfather status?
