Neurotoxins found in shark fin
Editor:
This may be important information to those who enjoy shark fin soup. I read in last month’s edition of National Geographic about a finding by University of Miami neurologist Deborah Mash.
She discovered an unsavory ingredient in the fins of seven shark species: a neurotoxin with possible links to Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Lou Gehrig’s disease. Called beta-methylamino-L-alanine (BMMA), the molecule is made by cyanobacteria, and accumulates as it travels up the food chain. Food for thought.
