Burnaby group ready to run a transitional housing facility
Re: Mayor Corrigan has his say on the homeless shelter issue (NewsLeader, Feb. 1)
On behalf of the Burnaby Task Force On Homelessness (BTFH), I would like to express our appreciation for Mayor Corrigan’s understanding of the needs of people, including the working poor, who are living in extreme poverty and homelessness, and the importance of providing ongoing support services for those people struggling with mental health and addiction issues.
The task force is thankful Mayor Corrigan is willing to accept a transitional supportive housing facility in Burnaby and knows that the BTFH has the demonstrated expertise amongst our membership to successfully operate this facility.
As a collaborative community group committed to solving homelessness in Burnaby, the BTFH understands the importance of working with all three levels of government to address homelessness and is committed to working with:
• the City of Burnaby to find a suitable location for a transitional housing facility and to assist with municipal requirements;
• the provincial government to allocate operational funding for support services;
• the federal government to secure funding for construction
We believe Burnaby citizens want to live in a community in which all citizens are respected and have their basic needs met. We ask for continued community support through website endorsements to move forward on these important initiatives.
