Lovely creatures

Re: Chicken bylaw gets another look

I am surprised about the concern expressed over the increase of pests if backyard chickens were allowed. One would think that our newly implemented garbage disposal system would attract more pests than a few backyard birds ever would.

So, anyone can have a baby or adopt a cat or dog, but four chickens are out of the question?

In regards to the Avian flu: What sort of stringent standards are currently in place for hobby farms that raise small flocks of chickens and neighbour large poultry farms? Are there any at all?

Chickens make a few clucks here and there, but dogs and cats certainly make their fair share of noises, too. They also produce fertilizer that can be turned into gardens and is incredibly useful. Chickens are also omnivores, meaning they also eat table scraps of all kinds (except citrus) and provide eggs for the family.

And my favourite, they make an excellent pet for kids and teach children about where their food source comes from and are a great way to teach kids about farming.

Chickens are lovely little creatures. Give them a chance, Abbotsford.
