Bylaws should not be flouted

Re: Life at sea and at the edge of the law (News Jan. 23).

It is great that Mayor Jensen is willing to give away what we all pay for.

Stated directly in the article is the violation of the Oak Bay bylaw. It is not just live aboards that are the issue, there are docks and derelict boats as well.

I am a taxpayer that can have a boat on a trailer for a day (maybe two) in my driveway and get a ticket from the bylaw officer, while someone else that contributes nothing of a monetary sense to the municipality lives for free.

There have been moorage spots for sale, in classified ads, on the Uplands side of Cadboro Bay and by the Oak Bay Marina ($1500). Great business plan, drop an anchor and buoy and sell it.

Oak Bays Tweed persona draws people from all over Canada to live here and gives us the distinction of being one of the best neighbourhoods in Canada to live and for that we retain value.

It’s time for the mayor to pull his head out of his spandex and realize that the taxpayers put him where he is before he just laughs off an obvious affront to some property owners.
