New Westminster strip club protest great for business
Re: Paramount owner 'blindsided' by petition (NewsLeader, Jan. 23)
At best it is amusing to take in the soap opera surrounding the Paramount Gentlemen’s Club.
Of course the students were both right as well as wrong in their demonstration denouncing the club. Right in the sense of Constitutional privilege exercise, but wrong in the sense that in a consumer society, demonstrations such as theirs only tend to promote notoriety and are as such counter-productive.
Paramount owner Steven Mountford’s claims of being “hurt” can only be taken with a grain of salt because in a scenario like this, his business cannot be really hurt. For in fact, the resulting “notoriety” can only result in more business for his club, if only because people are naturally curious about these things. In short, the demonstration was and is worth more to him because of the free publicity. His open invitation to talk it out with the students did not hurt either. Paramount dancers can only hope they do this more often. Demonstrations against the club is never bad for business.
