Establishment of secular sobriety group hailed as embracing option

To the editor:

I was very happy to read about the new group in Kelowna called the  Kelowna Secular Sobriety Group.

All I can say is it’s  about time. Thank-you to this group’s organizers.

While I am not against religion or its followers, I am against it being forced down your throat by an organization that has a monopoly on the desperation of persons in need of support.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I know these groups have helped millions of people and I fully support that.

I also know that in some readings they say: “God as you see him.”

I just feel that perhaps they need to rethink the old literature to allow for changing times and all beliefs.

I myself, have attended such a group when a loved one was having trouble staying sober.

We both attended specific groups designed to help but found that both groups brought up the word God in almost every piece of literature that was read during the meetings.

For a non-religious person or a follower of other creators, this can really thwart one from attending or staying with such a group.

Unfortunately, this happened with both of us at a time when we so desperately needed support.

Sandy Gordon,

Kelowna
