‘Yea’ for school district 40
Re: School District 40: Yea or Nay? (Letters, NewsLeader, Dec. 21)
I disagree with John Unger. I think we should keep New Westminster School District 40. There have been numerous problems over the years with the district but that is not a reason to give up. Mr. Unger is clearly dissatisfied with the current state of affairs but the school board is made up of elected officials, chosen by the people of New Westminster and that must be respected.
There is always the opportunity to fight an election every three years. Just because your people were not all elected does not mean the board should be dissolved for good. I have two kids going to school in the district, and despite the current problems I feel they are still receiving a good education.
I firmly believe the needs of New Westminster would be swallowed if our school district were combined with Burnaby, which is almost three times larger. Burnaby would dominate votes, elected officials, policy and the use of resources. I could see that New Westminster would be looked upon as nuisance if the school boards were merged.
It is important for people in any community to have some control over their region, and if we gave this up I fear this would be the first step in yielding all sorts of rights and control to other communities in the Lower Mainland.
School District 40, Yea!
