Leash compromise at Morrell possible

To the Editor,

Re: Compromise on leashes needed, Letters, March 17.

I would have to agree with the dog owners on this one. I can see the other side of the coin as well with regard to dogs being off-leash when schoolchildren are using the park, so let’s have a compromise then.

Off-leash starts at 4 p.m. on weekdays and off-leash all day  on weekends, unless of course the park is needed for children, i.e. egg hunts at Easter or Halloween in the fall.

There is a sandwich board for this purpose, that usually states children’s programs are in session, keep all dogs on leashes.

Also, Morrell Sanctuary is shy on volunteers as it is, so who is going to be the likely candidate to walk each and every trail all day long on weekdays and weekends to police it if they make it mandatory that leashes must be worn at all times day or evening?

I have been a volunteer with the Morrell Nature Sanctuary off and on since 1989. I personally have had one altercation with a big dog off-leash that didn’t like little dogs and, of course, I had two little dogs at the time.

After all the dust settled from that incident, I reminded the fellow, who by the way was very co-operative, that having that kind of dog off-leash was not a good idea. He agreed with me, but thought there was not much traffic at the sanctuary.

To be honest I never saw that fellow again, and that was in 2001.
