What steps need to be taken in order to improve public transportation in your community? Part 3
Posted October 01, 2008 3:10PMFunding for transportation improvements comes from all four levels of government and is obtained through collaborative planning. Changes and improvements by TransLink and Coast Mountain Bus Company are identified in regional plans every five years; the next two-year planning process involving considerable public input is expected to begin in early 2009.
A current federal-provincial waterfront goods movement study, including recommendations, is near completion for public release and the provincial Ministry of Transportation is currently completing its review of the Second Narrows Ironworkers Memorial bridgehead interchanges and traffic flow.
Work on the District’s Official Community and Transportation Plans will also get fully underway in 2009. We continue to work with our partners – including TransLink and Ministry of Transportation – to make other improvements in our community that could include:
1. Permanent yard location for servicing all North Shore transit vehicles
2. East-west lower level crossing insulated from Ironworkers Memorial Bridge congestion
3. Ongoing upgrading and support of commuter and recreational cycling routes
4. Relocation and upgrading of Phibbs Exchange to a safer site
5. Upgrading of service times out of Lonsdale concurrent with third Seabus
6. Replacement of older buses with newer lower-emission technologies
7. Improved industrial traffic crossings across the railway tracks
8. More east-west connections across the North Shore
