The Sarah Palin of B.C.?
Posted by Tom Fletcher - BC Local News - September 16, 2008 10:48AMExpect to hear more from Langley MLA Mary Polak in the months to come, partly because of the phenomenon of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin south of the border.
Both are relatively young and glamorous, forged in the harsh arenas of local politics, and darlings of social conservatives for their family values track records.
According to the New York Times, the McCain-Palin campaign denies that she supports censorship, following reports that when she was a small-town councillor in Alaska, Palin tried to remove a book called Daddy’s Roommate from the local library.
For her part, Polak disputes the public perception that she fought to keep same-sex books away from kindergarten and grade one students in B.C.
After a lengthy court battle, the court ruled that other books with illustrations of different family structures were more age-appropriate than the disputed ones, she points out, adding that the rejected books included “advocacy” content that the court found was not suitable for young children.
