Week 4's Den Report talks about the week so far in Lions camp.
The Den Report, Week 4
Posted July 22, 2009 2:29PMThe Den Report opens up for week four of the CFL season with some exciting news as slotback Lyle Green's wife Olivia has given birth to a healthy six-pound, seven-ounce baby boy named Micah.
In other news, the team has brought in yet another import offensive tackle in ex-University of Miami starter Chris Rutledge. The 22-year-old started at tackle for the Hurricanes in 2007 and 2008, stands 6-foot-5 and tips the scales at 311 pounds.
The 23-year-old was a late training camp cut of the Montreal Alouettes and will start his Lions career on the practice roster.
Ian Smart, the scatback who won the starting running back position in training camp, will be back for this week's tilt with Calgary, moving both Martell Mallett, who couldn't get it going against Edmonton and Tyler Ebell down one slot on the depth chart.
Also returning to the lineup this week will be quarterback Buck Pierce. Pierce took all the first-team reps this week in practice despite the outstanding four-TD performance of Jarious Jackson in the Leos week 3 beat-down of Edmonton, which gave him the Gibson's Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week honour.
Slotback Paris Jackson took home the top Canadian of the week award for his nine-catch, 126-yard game. Jackson was also fined an undisclosed amount by the league for his 'hot foot' touchdown celebration.
All this week, the Lions have been practicing with their jerseys turned inside-out, possibly in an effort to deter 'spies' from other teams from taking notes after a Winnipeg Blue Bombers scout was caught diagramming Hamilton's plays last week.
One other interesting CFL tidbit from the week that may interest college football fans from down south, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed former Texas Tech standout quarterback Graham Harrell to a two-year contract.
Harrell is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in NCAA history but concerns about his arm strength and ability to read defenses - Texas Tech employed a Spread offensive scheme that sent three to five wide receivers running downfield at once, creating big gaps - led to him not being selected in the 2009 NFL Draft.
He will battle Steven Jyles and Dalton Bell for the backup spot to starter Darian Durant for the 'Riders, but could see some playing time if Durant continues to struggle with turnovers, as he's thrown five interceptions and fumbled twice in his three starts this season.
Gametime for the Lions' Friday matchup with the 2008 Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders is 7:30 p.m. Major events from the game will be tweeted on @BCLNSports on Twitter and be sure to check BCLocalNews.com for a recap after the game. The game will be broadcast on TSN (local blackouts apply) with a simulcast on TEAM 1040.
