Ex-Lions running back Stefan Logan is having a solid start to his first NFL training camp in Pittsburgh.
The Den Report, Logan impressing in NFL camp
Posted August 05, 2009 2:53PMKicking off this week's Den Report is a sighting of former Lion Stefan Logan, who led the Lions in rushing with 889 yards and caught 52 balls out of the backfield in 2008. The scatback is having a strong start to training camp with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers.
Steelers' head coach Mike Tomlin was impressed with what the 5-foot-7, 180-pounder can do in receiver sets as well.
'We are kind of surprised by what he has been able to do as a wide receiver," he said Monday. 'He is running back capable ... but he is not a fish out of water at wide receiver.'
Logan is unlikely to stick with Pittsburgh exclusively as a running back, as he is stuck behind at least four players better suited to the position in the NFL - Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore and Frank Summers - and he will be in an uphill fight to unseat third-round draft pick Mike Wallace as the team's punt returner, so his versatility will be the difference between an NFL job and heading back to Vancouver.
Former Lions head coach and defensive coordinator Dave Ritchie - who led the Lions to their third Grey Cup title in 1994 - was in attendance at practice on Wednesday, but he insisted it was only to visit his old friend Wally Buono.
Ritchie retired before the 2008 CFL season and now lives in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
With the Leos picking up JoJuan Armour as a free agent earlier this week, it means Javier Glatt, who was starting at middle linebacker, will be moving to special teams duty.
Armour, who was cut by Calgary during training camp for 'disciplinary issues', brings a more in-your-face attitude to the defense, something the Lions sorely lacked in the first five games of the season, but Buono, having worked with players like Alondra Johnson, Anthony McLanahan and Carl Kidd in the past, isn't concerned with reining him in.
Gametime for the Lions' Friday night matchup with Calgary is 7:30 on TSN with a simulcast on TEAM 1040. Check BCLocalNews.com for a recap immediately following the game and don't forget to follow us on Twitter @BCLNSports for real-time play-by-play of the game.
