The Den Report, Lions stomped 48-10 by Stamps

BC Lions quarterback Jarious Jackson said in four words what took three agonizing hours to watch: "They kicked our ass[es]."

The Lions were thrashed 48-10 by the defending Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders Friday night and now that we are about 36 hours removed from the beat-down Calgary laid upon B.C., some analysis is needed.

Laymen will quickly point to quarterbacking as the main reason why the Leos were so thoroughly routed by Calgary, as the combination of Buck Pierce and Jackson only completed 10 of 24 passes for 103 yards, but the quarterback can't get the ball to his receivers if he doesn't have any time.

Jackson and Pierce were sacked five times Friday and hurried at least 10 times. Particularly disappointing was the play of rookie Daren Heerspink, who was solid in his first game, but a sieve against Odell Willis, who had two sacks on the night.

It was correctly pointed out on the telecast of the game that a turning point was when the Lions chose to punt out of their end zone instead of simply taking a knee and kicking off. Calgary was able to cash in a few plays later after a 27-yard return by Titus Ryan and put the game out of reach.

It was an uncharacteristically bad decision by coach Buono, and with the Lions slipping to 1-3 for the first time since 2004, the fan base is getting restless.

With the Lions struggling to get anything done offensively this season, could it be time for the team to try out Travis Lulay in an expanded role? Other than an outstanding performance from Jackson in week 3, getting the ball downfield has been a chore for the Lions to this point and Jackson was his old, inconsistent self Friday night, only completing two of his eight attempts for six yards and a pick.

Lulay has a strong arm, quick feet and a good pedigree - the last CFL quarterback to come out of the state of Montana - even though he went to the University of Montana rather than Montana State - was 2006 Grey Cup MVP Dave Dickenson.

Lost in the shuffle of the Lions putrid performance was a solid showing for rookie running back Martell Mallett, who had 77 yards on only seven carries and appears to have taken the starting job, which was tenuously held by Ian Smart when the Lions broke camp. Smart has returned to his forte - returning kicks.

With NFL camps opening soon, hopefully the Lions are scouring the waiver wire in an effort to improve both their offensive and defensive lines, which were both extremely underwhelming - did anyone hear the names Aaron Hunt, Brent Johnson or Ricky Foley during the game? Hunt did record a sack and five tackles, and Johnson had five tackles but both were largely silent.

The next Lions game is Friday at 4:30 from Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton and will be televised on TSN with a simulcast on TEAM 1040.
