The Den Report, Lions maul Esks 40-22

The Lions got their first win of the season last night against Edmonton and it was due in no small part to backup quarterback Jarious Jackson, who threw for 362 yards and four touchdowns in relief of an injured Buck Pierce.

Jackson was able to get both Geroy Simon and Paris Jackson their first 100-yard games of the season after they both struggled during the first two games of the season.

Emmanuel Arceneaux looks like a legitimate third weapon for the Leos in the passing game and this was exemplified when he blew past the Eskimos defenders for his third touchdown in his first three CFL contests after having no catches for the first three quarters.

While the passing game was firing on all cylinders for the Lions, they were unable to get any traction running the ball, only gaining 66 yards on 20 attempts. Starting running back Martell Mallett struggled, only gaining 26 yards on his 15 carries, but scored his first CFL touchdown in the first quarter.

Tyler Ebell and Travis Lulay saw their first action in the offense for the Lions in garbage time on Thursday, with Ebell catching two passes for five yards and carrying once for six. Lulay completed all three of his passes off the bench for 20 yards.

Sean Whyte was outstanding in his first game as a Lion, punting seven times for 304 yards and pinned the Eskimos deep several times with coffin corner kicks. He also made good on his only field goal attempt, a 23-yard chip shot.

Also making his first start was left tackle Daren Heerspink, a recent cut of the St. Louis Rams who spent the first two weeks on the Lions practice squad. Heerspink was solid in his first outing and the Lions line only surrendered two sacks on the night, compared to 10 in their first two games.

On defense, safety Barron Miles had four tackles and a pick, bringing his career interception total to 59. Miles has a long way to go to catch Less Browne, the CFL's all-time leader in thievery with 87 career picks, but he could catch Terry Irvin and Larry Highbaugh who currently sit second and third all-time with 62 and 66 INT's, before the season is over.

In community news, the Lions will be holding a free open practice at David Lam Park in Yaletown on Sunday from 12-4 p.m. The first hour is an autograph session, and from 1:15 until 2, kids are invited on to the field to 'play with the pros'. The Lions have their full team practice from 2-4.

The next Lions tilt is next Friday at 7:30 when B.C. plays host to Calgary. The game will be televised on TSN with a simulcast on TEAM 1040, but don't forget to check BCLocalNews.com for the recap and also be sure to follow @BCLNSports on Twitter for in-game updates.
