LETTER: Just ignorant of the facts
Free speech, free press and education are vital parts of the foundation to a free and democratic society, and I applaud the authors of the letters responding to the article about Justin and Brett for exercising their right of free speech by voicing their opinions by writing to this paper. However, these letters also show that much education still needs to be done.
First off, let me say that I do not consider the authors to be homophobic or hateful. I do however, consider them ignorant of the subject at hand because the points and arguments made in those letters are as usual one-sided and illogical.
The authors allude to the concept that being gay is a choice.
Logic dictates that if I choose to be gay, then you at one point, chose to be straight.
Tell me the day you chose to be straight? Or better yet, choose for one day to be gay.
You speak of children that should be raised by a loving mom and dad and I applaud you for your dreams. But here are some facts and statistics for you.
The divorce rate in Canada is well over 40 per cent.
Twenty-six per cent of families with children are headed by a single parent.
Deadbeat parents owe more than $2 billion in unpaid child support.
Nearly 55,000 children and youth were the victims of a sexual offence or physical assault in 2009, about three in 10 of which were perpetrated by a family member.
In Canada alone, there are 30,000 unwanted children waiting for adoption.
“There is no published scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of ‘reparative therapy’ as a treatment to change ones sexual orientation.” (American Psychiatric Association)
In his statement on June 19, 2013, Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, publicly apologized to the LGBT community and admitted that after 37 years of trying to “change” gay people all he could show for was a lot of hurt and suffering and countless suicides.
Studies have shown that children of same-sex couples experience higher levels of general health and family cohesion than those from traditional families.
With all the hurdles and obstacles we face to become parents, I dare you to provide evidence or proof of any child raised in a same sex family suffering abuse or neglect.
Same sex marriage has been legal in Canada for almost 10 years now and despite prophesies of doom, about the breakdown of society, I dare you to provide proof that this country is falling apart.
While I don’t know Justin and Brett personally, they are part of our family and if they were to ever reach out for help, I have no doubt that we would step up to the challenge and support them in any and all ways possible. Can you say the same?
In closing, if you really wish to make a difference, clean your own house first before you try to tell us how to build our homes.
Stop the sexual and physical abuse of children.
Encourage your fellow Christians to get involved in adopting 30,000 unwanted children.
Support single parents so they don’t have to depend on the deadbeat parents of their children.
Finally, let me assure you that we will not justify our existence to you or anyone else.
This god you worship has been used to justify every evil done by man. I think it’s high time we learn from history and not just from one book.
Matthew 7:3-5: Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4. How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5. You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye
