It’s kind of a big deal, the 13-year-old says.
Last summer, Drew Van Unen sold T-shirts with his cartoon cars designs on them. He sold quite a few, the Rockridge student says, but nothing like 15,000.
That’s the number of pins that will be created from Van Unen’s design especially for the Olympics.
He’s the elementary school age group winner in West Vancouver’s Olympic pin design contest, which saw more than 400 entries in its elementary and secondary school categories. Contestants were asked to showcase their definition of the North Shore and Olympic ideals.
Van Unen’s design incorporates large 2010 numbers in which the Lions Gate Bridge and North Shore mountains pop out.
“The design just kind of came to me,” Van Unen says.
Creativity runs in his family. Van Unen’s mother is an interior designer and his father designs and builds houses. And although Van Unen’s design is fun and cartoonish, the Grade 8 students says his passion lies with drawing realistic pictures.
Once the Olympics are in full swing and the collector pins available, Van Unen thinks it will be pretty cool to see people wearing his design. He’s excited to put his on.
Emily Wei, winner of the secondary school age group, is also eager to wear her design. Wei also includes the Lions Gate Bridge and local mountains in her drawing.
“At first I didn’t know what to draw because West Vancouver is so big,” she told West Van council last week while being awarded for her design.
She said she was careful to include the lighthouse from Light House Park in her picture, as it’s the perfect park for a game of capture the flag, she added.
“I drew what makes up my good memories in the community.”
The nine student-designed pins will be available in the new year.
