In endorsing the P2 proposal, Coun. Vassilaki dismissed citizens’ concerns regarding tower heights, site density, its inconsistency with OCP policy and few community benefits from a major upzoning from 10 to 23 storeys. He stated “folks, you’ve got to understand that change is coming and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.”

Going green not new

What can we learn from the past about going green? In years gone by there were many tribes that existed on this planet. Although they had many different names and lived in many different climates, their members always worked together as a community and built their homes from materials obtained locally from their surroundings. The homes they built were no bigger than what they needed. In Africa the tribes used leaves for roofing materials and mud for the walls. In Canada the Eskimos used ice to build igloos. In the desert the tribes used animal dung mixed with water to build their huts. Everything was taken from their surroundings and their environment, and once finished with, the materials could return back to earth without any harm to their environment.

Among concerns expressed at the P2 towers public hearing was lack of detail regarding the financial underpinnings of the proposal as it bears upon actual completion. During his wandering speech, the developer referenced past success as a 1991 highrise he built in Surrey and two golf/homes projects. Although P2’s hotel and grocery store are currently uncommitted, he has faith in project completion because units will be marketed in advance of construction and the phased agreement with the city has a 10-year window.

It is unfortunate, that comments are too often made on incomplete or inaccurate information. This brings me to address concerns which we discussed at the South Okanagan Boundary Labour Council meeting last week. There was an article in the Kelowna Daily Courier, reporting that B.C. paramedics are “paid quite handsomely, between $60,000 and $90,000 a year.” At this meeting, we were fortunate to hear directly from a B.C. paramedic of their situation and struggles for a fair wage for a fair day’s work. After working as a paramedic for 20 years, this worker does not receive such a “handsome” wage and also suffers all the pains and injuries of 20 years of a high-stress and physically demanding job.

Seven years ago I could not swim a metre. Now I am a senior and can swim 500 metres non stop. I took Aqua Adults 1 & 2. and Intro to Lane swimming and during this time the lifeguards taught me how to swim. They make it a happy, safe and secure place to go for activities. They all are totally enthusiastic about their work. The pool area needs renovation now, the change-rooms are becoming antiquated and in constant need of repair.
